Sleep and Melatonin in Diurnal Species
نویسنده
چکیده
Melatonin secretion, occurring at night in both diurnal and nocturnal species, provides an important circadian signal for initiating different types of behavior. In diurnal vertebrates, e.g., humans, macaques, zebrafish, this pineal hormone also has a pronounced acute effect on sleep. This effect on homeostatic sleep regulation is mediated via specific melatonin receptors and has a distinct dose-dependency, reaching plateau at near-physiological concentrations.

Melatonin promotes sleep-like state in zebrafish.
The sleep-promoting effect of the pineal hormone melatonin in humans is known for decades. However, the mechanisms of this phenomenon remain obscure, mainly due to lack of a simple, genetically tractable, animal model. We now report that melatonin promotes sleep-like state in a diurnal lower vertebrate, zebrafish (Danio rerio), and this effect is mediated through activation of specific melatoni...
متن کاملThe Effect of Melatonin on Pediatric Drug-Resistant Epilepsy; a Randomized Double Blind Clinical Trial
BackgroundAbout 15 to 40% of children with seizures are refractory to standard anti-epileptic drugs and for such patients, other treatments such as surgery and the ketogenic diet can reduce seizure frequency. Melatonin is a natural pineal gland hormone. The use of melatonin for controlling pediatric seizures is still controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of melatonin on seizure...
متن کاملFamilial Circadian Rhythm Disorder in the Diurnal Primate, Macaca mulatta
In view of the inverse temporal relationship of central clock activity to physiological or behavioral outputs in diurnal and nocturnal species, understanding the mechanisms and physiological consequences of circadian disorders in humans would benefit from studies in a diurnal animal model, phylogenetically close to humans. Here we report the discovery of the first intrinsic circadian disorder i...
متن کاملMelatonin Secretion Pattern in Critically Ill Patients: A Pilot Descriptive Study
Critically ill patients have abnormal circadian and sleep homeostasis. This may be associated with higher morbidity and mortality. The aims of this pilot study were (1) to describe melatonin secretion in conscious critically ill mechanically ventilated patients and (2) to describe whether melatonin secretion and sleep patterns differed in these patients with and without remifentanil infusion. E...

This study quantifies sex differences in the diurnal and circadian variation of sleep and waking while controlling for menstrual cycle phase and hormonal contraceptive use. We compared the diurnal and circadian variation of sleep and alertness of 8 women studied during two phases of the menstrual cycle and 3 women studied during their midfollicular phase with that of 15 men. Participants underw...
